Wynette’s Home Town Hopeful for U.S. Stamp Release Celebration

Music legend and Mississippi native Tammy Wynette has been approved as a subject for a U.S. stamp. Wynettes home town wants to hold a ceremony to mark its debut in Tremont, a town of 460 people, near the farm where Wynette grew up.

There’s already a committee to plan events for whenever the stamp is issued.

“We’re really working, trying to get the unveiling of the first issue of the stamp to be here in her home town, Tremont.” Committee chairwoman Holly Ford said, “We’re actively doing whatever we can to make preparations for this event.”

A list of future stamps in the Music Icons series was released in January. It said Wynette had been approved as a subject, but the design process had not begun.

Approval by the Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee does not guarantee that the U.S. Postal Service will release the stamp and not every stamp gets a first-day-of-issue ceremony.

“This could be a very big event,” Ford said. “Tremont was awarded a 2.5 million dollar grant awhile back from the state for a tourism attraction and this would tie in with that.”

This would not only benefit Tremont, but help with tourism in Mississippi, all while remembering music icon Tammy Wynette. Tremont would be a destination travel spot for tour buses visiting music legends along with Tupelo, parts of Louisiana and Nashville.

Ford said, “She was a legend. They call her the first lady of country music because back in her day she was the first female country artist to sell one million records.”
