A 7-year-old in George County is dead after an accidental drowning.

George County Emergency Dispatch received a call around 2:15 on Tuesday afternoon saying that the child had fallen in a local pond in the Howell Community. When police officers and first-responders arrived on the scene, they found the child unresponsive.

The child was then taken to the George Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead. No name or gender of the child was given, and the George County Sheriff’s Office issued the following statement on the matter.

“Sheriff Keith Havard would like to thank the law enforcement officers, first responders & dispatchers, medical staff, and volunteers that answered the call for help. Their actions embodied the community spirit and love for which George County is known. Please keep the family of this child in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Officers do not believe that there was any “foul play” involved, but they will continue to investigate.
