JACKSON, MISS–The Mississippi lawyer suing Gov. Phil Bryant over the “Southern Cross” will appear before the court today in an effort to have the state flag changed.
The motion hearing for Moore v. Bryant is scheduled for today at 1:30.
Leading up to the lawsuit, Governor Bryant has proclaimed April as Confederate Heritage Month, just after the bill to vote for changing the state flag died before reaching the chamber floors.
Bryant wrote that April is “the month in which the Confederate States began and ended a four-year struggle”. The proclamation has sparked debate throughout the state and the nation because slavery was not mentioned.
“This (proclamation) was not an accident at all. The Governor was very intentional, he did it as an insult to African Americans in Mississippi,” says Attorney Carlos Moore.
The hearing will be held in Courtroom 5B in Jackson before U.S. District Judge Carlton W. Reeves.
