AUDIO: Where Gulfport Was and Is Now Since Hurricane Katrina

GULFPORT, MISS– Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes describes the city the day after the storm as if a bomb had gone off at Cat Island. 

But Hewes says that for a day of reflection and remembrance for the Mississippi Gulf Coast, humor is healing.

In his account, Hewes talks about the natural disaster and state of emergency that had never been seen before that day, and how the spirit of South Mississippi shone like a beacon in that darkness:
