Some Blue Cross Customers May have to Pay Full Price for Drugs or Switch Doctors

JACKSON, Miss. – If you have Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) insurance, prescriptions written by out of network doctors are no longer covered. It is part of the insurance giant’s new policy for 2014. Now customers who use out of network doctors have no option but to pay full retail price for drugs or switch to an in-network doctor if they do not want to pay full price.

There was bill that would have amended state law to prevent BCBS’s policy from taking place, but it was struck down in committee by your legislators.

Meredith Virden with BCBS told the Jackson Free Press that the new policy was added in response to requirements of the Affordable Care Act and to “encourage the use of in-network doctors.” The policy is under review by the state insurance commission.
