Three Mississippi counties are closing brides due to safety concerns.

“The number of bridges that are in need of repair is very large, we also know that our counties, the cities, and the state are trying to tackle that issue as best they can,” said Scott Waller, Interim President and CEO of the Mississippi Economic Council.

However, Waller says it’s not as easy as fixing a bridge once.

“In some cases, once they get one fixed, another one is in need of attention,” said Waller. “it’s a problem that it’s really just very difficult to keep up with.

In total, 23 bridges are closing.

“If people are not going to adhere to the weight limit signs, then that is only going to make the bridge deteriorate at a faster rate,” said Waller. “They have no choice but to close it until they can address it. It is unfortunate that we are in that situation, but we are and I think that our transportation officials at all levels are very cognisant of the fact that the number one issue here is safety.”
