Clarke County Hostage Situation Over, Man Taken Down by Highway Patrol SWAT Team

CLARKE COUNTY, Miss.–Holding a man and a woman hostage for hours and tearing the woman’s clothes off is what got Verbie Watkins arrested in Clarke County Thursday night. The man was still unaccounted for Friday morning.

The man is who made the 911 call, reported WTOK-TV. He told deputies that he had been held hostage in the house, but had managed to escape. When deputies got there, they said Watkins was shooting off guns in the yard, so they got back and called in the Highway Patrol SWAT Team.

It took several hours, but the team and Clarke County deputies got inside and safely put Watkins in cuffs.

Sheriff Todd Kemp told the TV station that the woman and Watkins were in a relationship and had some kind of fight. He beat her up, stripped her, took her out in the yard, brought her back inside and held her there for hours.
