DMR to Sell Two Big Boats

BILXOI, Miss. — The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (DMR) is looking to get rid of two boats. They were previously owned by the foundation of former DMR Director Bill Walker.

Walker leased the boats over several years before turning them over to the department in April 2013. The department spent about $1.4 million maintaining the boats. The new DMR Director Jamie Miller told WLOX the boats were used to take state lawmakers, influential citizens on fishing trips and they have no intentions keeping them.

The boats, a 36-foot Topaz and 42-foot Californian are estimated to be worth $400,000. Sealed bids for the boats will be accepted until Monday, July 15. Those bids will be opened at the Commission of Marine Resources meeting on Tuesday, July 17.
