Extreme Heat, Storms Possible in the State Today

JACKSON, Miss.–Look out Central Mississippi and the Delta. It’s gonna be really hot today. In some areas a heat advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. Wednesday. Heat indices are expected to be as high as 108, increasing the risk for heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses.

The heat advisory is for Bolivar, Sunflower, Leflore, Washington, Humphreys, Holmes, Issquena, Sharkey, Yazoo, Madison, Warren, Hinds, Rankin and Claiborne counties.

The National Weather Service says lows tonight will not bring much relief, and were not expected to be below 75.

Drink plenty of fluids to help keep cool. That does not include beer, sweet tea or sodas. Stay out of the heat as much as possible. Take frequent breaks. Wear loose fitting clothing. Check on your pets and make sure they have a way to stay cool and check on elderly neighbors.

One danger is leaving children in a vehicle. This can quickly cause death.

In north Mississippi there’s a 60 percent chance of storms and cloud cover is expected to keep temps around 90 and heat indices near 104.

Central and south also have chances for storms, which may provide some temporary heat relief.
