Felon charged after son shoots himself

Earlier this week Hattiesburg Police officers responded to a report of a shooting at a a Family Dollar store on West 4th Street.

When officers arrived, they were given information that an 8 year-old boy was taken to a local hospital with a gunshot wound, that occurred in the parking lot of the business.

Officers located the victim at a local hospital, and the child was then transported to a Jackson hospital to be treated for the injury.

The child’s parents were inside the store, when the child accidentally fired the gun, causing the injury.

23 year-old Marcus Rankin, of Hattiesburg, the child’s father, was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The investigation is ongoing and other charges are pending.
