Former Deputy Clerk Arrested for Embezzlement

CHARLESTON, Miss.- Former Tallahatchie County Tax Collector’s office Deputy Clerk Essie Adams has been arrested and booked into the Tallahatchie County Jail. She surrendered herself to the State Auditor’s office Wednesday and was indicted by a Tallahatchie County grand jury on one count of embezzlement.

42-year-old Essie Adams has been accused of pocketing tax payments from Tallahatchie County property owners.

Adams worked at the Tax Collector’s office in Tallahatchie County for 11 years before she was fired.

“This is a classic case of an employee stealing money from hardworking taxpayers, and Adams will be held accountable for her actions,” Auditor Pickering said.

She initially embezzled $19,245.91, but she paid $18,108 of it back after she was confronted. She was also served a formal demand of $4,338.45 including the outstanding portion of embezzled funds, interests, and cost.
