BRANDON, Miss.- Monday former Mayor Rod Nicholson was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
He was charged with five counts of embezzlement which he plead guilty to on Nov. 23. He was originally arrested on March 30 after he was indited by Rankin County grand jury.
Prosecutors said Nicholson used a city credit card to pay for $2,700 in repairs on two personal vehicles. One prosecutor said Nicholson is believed to have embezzled more than $32,000, reports WAPT.
Before the sentencing took place he apologized to the judge for his actions and asked if he could continue serving in the job that he has held for the last 25 years.
All of the witnesses that testified on his behalf asked for leniency, saying that Nicholson was very remorseful for his actions. He originally faced up to 20 years per count.
