Governor Bryant Appoints George Mitchell, Jr. as Circuit Court Judge for 5th District

JACKSON, Miss.- Gov. Phil Bryant has appointed George Mitchell, Jr. as Circuit Court Judge for the 5th Circuit Court District. The district includes Attala, Carroll, Choctaw, Grenada, Montgomery, Webster, and Winston counties. He will fill the unexpired term of Clarence Morgan, III who is retiring effective December 31. Mitchell’s appointment will begin January 1, 2016, and will run until the position is filled by special election to be held in November 2016.

“I am happy to appoint George to this position,” Gov. Bryant said. “His wealth of diverse experience as a prosecutor and in private law practice will serve the citizens of the 5th Circuit Court District well. Additionally, his leadership as a military veteran and Mississippi Court of Military Appeals judge demonstrates character of the highest level.”

Mitchell has been engaged in private law practice in Eupora, Miss., for 32 years. He also served as the city attorney and city prosecuting attorney for the town of Maben, Miss., for the last eight years. Additionally, Mitchell is currently serving as the Webster County School Board attorney.

Mitchell had a decorated military career that included receiving the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, the Mississippi Magnolia Cross, and the Air Force Legion of Merit, along with numerous other medals and awards.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Mississippi State University and earned his juris doctor degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law.

“To be appointed Circuit Judge by Governor Bryant is one of the greatest honors I have received and to which I shall forever be grateful,” Mitchell said. “I will continue as the judges of this district have done in considering all facts and the laws applicable to each case before reaching a decision or making a judgment on a sentence.”

Mitchell is a member of Lollar’s Grove Baptist Church in Webster County, Miss. He has two adult children and two grandchildren.
