Greenwood School District Lays Off Employees

GREENWOOD, Miss.- A total of 28 district employees in the Greenwood School District will be losing their jobs, with 25 of them being assistant teachers. The school board called a special meeting on April 2nd, which is where they approved the layoffs. Along with the 25 assistant teachers, a clerk’s position, a custodial position, and a district warehouse job are also being eliminated.

According to spokeswoman Margaret Dean, the positions were eliminated as a cost-saving measure because of a lack of state and local funds.

Additional details about the layoffs have yet to be disclosed from school board officials. It is still unknown when they will take effect, which district schools would be affected or how many assistant teachers would remain with the district.

The school board is set to meet again on Tuesday.
