An officer in Hattiesburg was the target of a stabbing over the weekend, but his protection came in handy.

Hattiesburg police officers responded to a report of a man with a knife on Cahal Street on Sunday. When they arrived on the scene, officers observed 51-year-old Johnny Williams wielding the weapon.

Officers attempted to defuse the situation and calm the suspect down, but according to a news release from the HPD, Williams never responded.

After the standoff lasted for nearly an hour, police say that Williams then charged at the officer with the knife and stabbed him in the chest. Luckily, the officer was uninjured because he was protected by a bulletproof vest.

After Williams stabbed the officer, another officer deployed his taser, and they were able to subdue Williams and get him into custody.

Williams has now been charged with aggravated assault.
