JACKSON, Miss. – Mississippi State University will host the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Gridiron Classic on December 2nd and 3rd.
Kicking off at 11 a.m. on Friday; (12-0) Simmons will take on (12-2) Lumberton.
Simmons was crowned the state title last year and have continued their dominance this season. This will be a game won in the trenches as both teams are averaging over 300 yards rushing per game.
At 3 p.m. on Friday; Bay Springs will take on Calhoun City for the 2A title. Calhoun City has a record of 14-1 while Bay Springs is 12-3.
The Wildcats of Calhoun City have a stellar defense which only allows 8.6 points per game. They’ll be looking to contain Bay Springs’rushing attack which averages close to 270 yards per game.
At 7 p.m. on Friday will be the 6A state championship match up between Clinton (13-1) and Pearl (11-3). Both teams are looking for their first state title.
Big-time college prospect Cam Akers will have his hands full against a Pearl team that’s won 9 in-a-row and has only gives up and average of 13 points a game.
Saturday, starting at 11 a.m., Charleston (13-2) will take on Kemper County (14-1).
This is Charleston’s third year in-a-row to make it to the state title match-up, having fallen short the two previous years.
At 3 p.m. on Saturday; Lafeyette (12-2) matches up against Poplarville (12-1).
If you like old school football this game is for you. Lafayette comes in with a balanced offence averaging 131.9 yards passing and 233.6 yards on the ground, while Poplarville is averaging 379.5 yards rushing.
At 7 p.m. on Saturday; the 5A state champion will be crowned as West Point (13-1) takes on Laurel (13-1). West Point is going for it’s 8th title while Laurel will try to grab its 4th.
West Points strength lies in its running attack. Laurel’s bread-and-butter is its explosive passing attack.
All state championship games will be held at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville.
Tailgating will be allowed in the Junction, but no vehicles are allowed to park on the grass. Free shuttles will also be available around Mississippi State’s campus.
