Hub City hosts Golf Day to benefit William Carey

Four golf courses in Hattiesburg will host a golf day on Friday March 3, with the proceeds set aside for the rebuilding of William Carey University’s campus after the devastating January 21 tornado.

The Hattiesburg Country Club, Canebrake Country Club, Shadow Ridge and Timberton will all host the simultaneous events.

The money that is raised will be earmarked to cover lost computers, textbooks, cars and other belongings that were damaged due to the destruction of the EF3 tornado.

There will be prizes for the top three teams on each course, a prize for the closest to the hole on each course and lunch provided.

Ron Hickman is the PGA Master Professional at Pemberton Golf Club, and said the four organizations could not resist the opportunity to help the students at William Carey.

“It was such a devastating disaster,” said Hickman. “And it really hit at the wrong time for them. They were just starting to grow that college to the next level.”

Hickman said that the courses coming together is a sign of the strength of the community in Hattiesburg.

“It wasn’t a hard decision for all of us to come together just to do a day of golf,” said Hickman. “We’re going to try to rebuild the school for the students.”
