Kidnapping Confessions Concentrates Charges on Cousins

JACKSON, Miss. — Five people are planning to plead guilty next week to their roles in the kidnapping of 6-year-old Jashayla Hopson from her Kemper County school.

A change of plea hearing is set for November 6 in Jackson federal court for Shamarius Ruffin, Wanda Dancy, Shaquayla Johnigan, Joyce Johnigan and James Johnigan.

Jesse May Pollard is accused of masterminding the plot.  But she and her son, former University of Alabama basketball player Devonta Pollard have not pled guilty. They are expected to continue fighting the charges.  Police say Jesse May Pollard came up with the kidnapping scheme to pressure the child’s mother- her cousin- in a land dispute.  Jashayla was released and not harmed.
