Laying Our Mayors to Rest: Two Mayors to Have Funerals

JACKSON, Miss.–Funeral arrangements for Jackson Mayor Chokwe Lumumba were announced Thursday, but another Mississippi mayor, who didn’t make the big headlines, is also set to be buried after 30 years of service to his town.

Lumumba, who died Tuesday of natural causes, will be buried after a funeral Saturday, March 8, at 11 a.m. at the Jackson Convention Complex. He’ll be buried in Jackson, at Autumn Woods Cemetery on West Northside Drive.

Lumumba will lie in state at City Hall Friday, March 7, from 11 to 3:30, with a public memorial at 4.

Sandersville’s mayor, Jimmy Hill, will be remembered Saturday, March 1, with a graveside service at McGill Cemetery. Like Lumumba, he died Tuesday, aged 66. Hill had cancer.

He had served the city as mayor and alderman for 30 years.
