Magnolia tree planted to commemorate commissioning

GULFPORT, Miss.- Officials held a ceremony Tuesday morning to commemorate the commissioning of the USS Jackson last month at Jones Park in Downtown Gulfport.

The commissioning took place on December 5th in front of nearly 3,000 people. In its honor city officials decided to plant two magnolia trees. One in located in Jones park and the other in the capitol city of Jackson.

A bronze plaque is also being made to accompany the tree being placed in Jones park. Mayor Billy Hewes told WLOX that he sees this as a very appropriate way to recognize the bond between the military and the cities of the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
