Max Punishment for Man Who Killed Big Time Athlete

NEW ALBANY, Miss. – A West Point man has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2012 shooting death of a Starkville High School star athlete.

Tavaris Collins, 35, was sentenced Wednesday after a Union County jury found him guilty of first degree murder.   Devin Mitchell, 16, was attending a New Year’s Eve party with relatives at a West Point apartment complex when he was shot just after mid-night.  Collins had claimed he opened fire because he thought  the exploding  fireworks was someone trying to shoot him.
