The Mississippi Department of Corrections is investigating the death of an inmate in south Mississippi.
Prison officials at South Mississippi Correctional Institution in Leakesville found 57-year-old Eddie Shorty unconscious in his cell on Wednesday during a cell check and, and he was pronounced dead around 4:15 a.m.
Shorty’s cellmate was in the cell at the time of the check. No cause of death has been determined, but an autopsy has been ordered.
Sentenced in 1999, Shorty was serving a 30 year sentence for armed robbery.
