A mentally ill man shot at the Webster County Sheriff just before noon today.

The Webster County Sheriff’s Department along with the Eupora Police Department were called to come to a house just off of old 82 where they had to block off the road in all directions.

“We had a guy who has had mental problems in the past and we had another commitment on him today,” said Webster County Sheriff Tim Mitchell. “One of my guys went over there to pick him up and he barricaded himself in the house. He said that he was going to shoot anyone that came up in his yard.”

Mitchell said that when he kicked in the door the man grabbed a gun and pointed it at him.

“He got to a gun, pointed it at my chest and pulled the trigger, but it didn’t go off,” Mitchell said. “The gun misfired. I got him down and nobody got hurt.”

Sheriff Mitchell said that he would not be filing any charges at this time, instead, he will wait for a doctor to consult on the man’s mental status. However, Mitchell said the man could face charges of aggravated assault on a police officer at a later time.
