MHP enforcement period ends with 5,618 citations

Mississippi Highway Patrol

The Mississippi Highway Patrol 4th of July enforcement period ended at midnight last night.

Over the course of the five day enforcement period the MHP issued 5,618 citations and 100 DUI arrests.

A grand total of 183 crashes were investigated including 3 fatalities and 48 injuries on state, federal highways, and interstate systems.

The fatalities were down this year as compared to 2016 where six fatalities were recorded.

MHP says they also saw a huge reduction in seat belt citations throughout the period with 199 being issued.

During the 2016 July 4th period 444 seat belt citations were issued.

“We attribute this to responsible decisions by motorists regarding the new seatbelt law and the MHP “In the Click” safety campaign,” said Capt. Johnny Poulos with the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Throughout the campaign all available troopers were utilized statewide during the enforcement period conducting saturation patrols and safety checkpoints.
