TOPEKA, Kan. – The Meridian, Miss. born former leader of possibly the most hated church in America has died.
Fred Phelps died from health complications Wednesday night at the age of 84. He led the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan. Phelps was apparently excommunicated from the church by members in the summer of 2013 for unknown reasons.
The “church” is considered a hate group and is monitored by the Anti-Defamation League and Southern Poverty Law Center.
They are known for protesting military funerals and other events across the country, and are commonly recognized by waving signs that read “God Hates Fags” and “Thank God for 9/11.”
