Fighting an Apartment Fire Sends Two to the Hospital

JACKSON, Miss.- Fighting fire and trying to keep the community safe sent two firefighters to the hospital early Thursday morning. 

How the fire started at the Highland Square Apartments is still under investigation. The building was vacant when they got there.

Jackson Fire Chief Willie Owens told WAPT, “The firefighters were going to attack the fire, and as they were walking up the stairs, the stairs collapsed and they fell.”

One of the firefighters suffered a broken ankle and the other had injuries to both knees. They have been treated and both have been released from the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
