Miss. News Briefs: Dog Fighting Ring in the Woods, The Rapist Caught at WalMart

LAUREL, Miss.–It’s what goes on in the woods in so many counties. Now there’s evidence of a dogfighting ring near Laurel. Imagine pit bulls starved, then beaten, then fought to the death. It could make for a really awful nightmare. Here are some news briefs and some will be a little lighter than that one:

DOGFIGHTING RING IN THE WOODS
A dogfighting ring. The tell tale signs were found in the woods in Jones County Tuesday. WDAM reports there were pens in the woods and two pit bulls in pretty bad shape. They were filthy and starved and scared and now they’re being taken care of by Souther Cross Animal Rescue. Now the big job for deputies, finding out who’s in the ring and busting it.

RAPIST CAUGHT AT WALMART
Rape in Madison County, but now the guy cops think did it is in jail, caught at the Ridgeland WalMart Wednesday evening. The rape happened Wednesday morning, early. Jerson Nahum Martinez in the lockup.

TIM JONES DEATH PENALTY
The death penalty. Tim Jones, Jr. could get that if the prosecutors in South Carolina decide to go after it. But they have to wait until the autopsies of Jnnes’ five kids are in. They disappreared Aug. 28. The warrants that WLTX in Columbia, South Carolina got a look at Wednesday say Jones thought his five kids, oldest was eight, were going to kill him and feed him to the dogs. He’s originally from Mississippi, and was caught here in Smith County.

DICE SHOOTING SENTENCE
Shooting four people down during a dice game is why Joshua Hurst is going up for life. This shooting happened in Jackson back in 2013. Hurst was found guilty last month and Wednesday he got the bad news from the judge. Probably good news for everybody else though. Two of the people he shot died, and it was over small potatoes.

RUDE AWAKENING
Imagine waking up to being hit all over your body with a tire iron, then getting stabbed in the leg…
It happened to Victoria Watts early Wednesday, about 1 o’clock, but she stabbed back and Holmes County Sheriff Willie March says Shanki Kennedy was arrested and charged with breaking in and aggravated assault. What made it worse for Watts, was it looks like the man she married and was separated from was taking her TV in the front room while all of that was going on. The sheriff says they’re looking for him.
