Miss. News Briefs: Well-Known Lawyer Killed, Child Backed Over

JACKSON, Miss.–Here are some news briefs from NewsMS News and Weather Central:

PRECIOUS MARTIN KILLED
Killed in a four-wheller wreck, well-known Jackson-area lawyer Precious Martin, and his 10-year-old son is hurt bad and in the hospital. It happened Sunday evening near Martin’s home in Ridgeland. You might’ve heard the name. Martin had represented Hinds County and had been involved in several big court cases.

CHILD BACKED OVER
It’s the reason you have to watch very carefully for your kids, and it seems like this happens at least once every year in the state. Booneville, a two-yeStaar-old boy out playing in the yard and somebody backed over him Saturday about 5 o’clock. He was killed. It was an accident, no charges.

BRIGHT AND WONDERFUL FUTURE

A bright and wonderful future is the challenge from Gov. Bryant. He spoke at the Univ. of Miss. graduation this weekend. He said even though Mississippi is facing hard times with the tornadoes, the state has chosen to rise. He encouraged the graduates to do the same.

STAND-OFF ENDS
It was a stand-off in Jackson after a man locked himself in a house with guns and his girlfriend’s kid Sunday night. He surrendered to cops about 1 this morning.

MAYOR CALLS IT QUITS
You might could relate to this reason. Spending more time with the family. That’s the reason Magnolia’s 81-year-old mayor Melvin Harris gave for resigning, about a year after being re-elected.
