JACKSON, Miss. – Mississippi is not doing a good job taking care of its children. The personal finance social network, WalletHub says the state is doing the worst in the nation.
Researchers ranked states and the District of Columbia based on 16 factors, including infant death rates, foster care and food insecurity. Mississippi ranked last overall and in several individual categories like percentage of children in households with below poverty income, infant death rate and health. The state was near the bottom in other categories such as percentage of children in single parent homes (50th), education (50th), and economic well-being (49th).
The top five states are New Hampshire, Minnesota, New Jersey, Connecticut and Vermont.
