JACKSON, Miss.- The University of Southern Mississippi and Mississippi State University will both be headed to bowl games this year.
USM will compete in it’s second consecutive bowl game, this time at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome for the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. They will be facing off against Louisiana-Lafayette on December 17 at 8 p.m.
You can catch that game on ESPN, it will be televised.
“We couldn’t be any more excited for our players, coaches, fans, and the entire university community with the opportunity to return to a bowl game for a second consecutive season and in one of the greatest cities in the world,” Southern Miss Athletic Director Bill McGillis said in a release. “I’m proud of the way our players and coaches fought through adversity throughout the season to earn the opportunity to play in this game. The R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl should be both a terrific match-up on the field and a sensational atmosphere and environment off the field, with both programs supported by very passionate fan bases. We need to fill the Mercedes-Benz Superdome with Golden Eagles clad in Black & Gold and make a statement to the college football world about who we are.”
The Bulldogs are headed to Florida to face off against Miami University of Ohio for the St. Petersburg Bowl.
While MSU did not meet the six game win qualification to participate in a bowl game, their 55-20 victory over Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl and fifth win this season, along with their academic progress rate (APR) allowed them to be considered for a spot.
“On behalf of everyone at Mississippi State, we are excited to accept a bowl invitation for a school-record seventh straight year,” MSU Athletic Director John Cohen said.”St. Petersburg is an excellent destination, and our fans have shown over the years how well they travel to support the Bulldogs. We look forward to the experience of playing a bowl game in the state of Florida for the third time in five season. Congratulations to head coach Dan Mullen and his staff on earning a bid to the St. Petersburg Bowl.”
MSU has never faced off against the RedHawks.
