Mississippi Soldier Found Dead After Training in Georgia

AUGUSTA, GA — Second Lieutenant Anthony “Tony” Scardino was found dead Friday night after he did not show back up after land navigation training at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia.

Scardino was a member of the Mississippi Army National Guard, but was temporarily assigned to the 442nd Signal Battalion, 15th Regimental Signal Brigade training in the Signal Basic Officer Leadership Course. No foul play is suspected, but the circumstances of his death are still under investigation.

Scardino had been deployed to Iraq twice and once to Afghanistan.  During his military career, Scardino received the Bronze Star Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Mississippi War Medal, the Mississippi Emergency Service Medal, and the Parachutists Badge.

Scardino was 27-years-old and a native of Mississippi.
