Mississippi Weekend: Celebrating the Delta, Barbecue, and a Hometown Hero

JACKSON, Mississippi– If the weather has you stir crazy, there’s plenty to help get the energy burned off around the state this weekend.

The first stop is at the DeSoto County Museum in Hernando for the “This Delta” photo exhibit by Debra Ferguson.  The photographs highlight all that make up the Delta: hometown groceries, churches, farmland, and of course, the people. The exhibit is for all ages.

Next head over to Vicksburg to welcome home Malcolm Butler, the Vicksburg native and Super Bowl hero that caught that winning interception for the Patriots.

“The parade starts at 2:30,” says Laura Beth Strickland, Communications Manager for the Vicksburg Visitor Center, “and following that there’s a key ceremony… the mayor will give the key of the city to Malcolm.”  The parade runs along Washington street to China street and Mulberry to the Vicksburg convention center, where the key ceremony will be.

If barbecue is on your mind, the D’Iberville Barbecue Throwdown and Festival at the D’Iberville Civic Center is the place to be.

“Vendors come from different states,” says Desiree Marquez, “they’ll be competing for five thousand dollars and prizes.”

Marquez says it’s a family friendly event with plenty to do for the kids, including rides, games, and a train. Admission is free.
