Monday Storms, Damage, Injuries

PEARL, Miss. – Several people are hurt and one child is missing as a result of severe weather that was moving through the state early Monday.

What is believed to have been a tornado touched down in Covington County, just north of Collins, around 2 a.m.  The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) said seven people there have minor injuries and several homes had been damaged.  A shelter is opened at the Covington County Multipurpose Center on Industrial Park Drive.

In Yazoo County, the search has started again for a 9-year-old girl thought to have been swept away by flash flood waters.  Several homes and businesses in the area are also flooded.  And MEMA has received reports of wind damage to several homes in Neshoba County.

Damage assessments were continuing Monday. MEMA said its’ coordinators have contacted all emergency managers in the affected counties and is ready to assist with any resources they need.
