New Year’s Eve Wrecks Include Two Dead in Separate Accidents

VANCLEAVE, Miss.–A car hit a tree in VanCleave early Wednesday morning and two people are dead. The sheriff there said it was surprising that anyone inside the car lived. That was one of at least two deadly wrecks in the state Wednesday.

The New Year’s holiday for law enforcement, where they measure statistics, ends tonight.

The Jackson County wreck happened about 1:15 a.m. when a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am hit the tree on a county road.

Edward Parnel of Vancleave, 47, and Brian  Walls, 40, of Escatawpa both died. Two other people lived, but are in the hospital.

A log truck wrecked Wednesday morning in Jones County, while making a haul, and the driver was trapped inside. Ricky Stewart, of Decatur, was in the truck for over two hours after it hit another car and went down a bank.

Stewart died later Wednesday. The other driver wasn’t hurt badly.
