A News Mississippi Scam Alert

OXFORD, Miss. –If you own a business in the Oxford area, you could be the target of a power scam.

“Some people, or groups of people are calling our customers,” said Oxford Electric Department (OED) Business Manager Margie Abel.  “They are saying ‘you’ve not paid your bill.  You are past due.  We’re coming out right now to disconnect your service unless you pay me right now.’”

Able said the calls have been made from a 1-800 number and are in no way associated with OED.  “We do not operate that way,” she explained.  “Our standard practice is we do not contact customers and demand payment right then.  So I would suggest to not pay anyone that’s calling you.”

OED is working with the Oxford Police Department to investigate the calls.  Anyone with questions about the current status of their account should contact OED directly at 662-232-2373
