Omega Protein Plant Explosion Kills One, Injures Three

MOSS POINT, Miss.- An explosion at the Moss Point Omega Protein plant around 9:30 Monday morning has led to one dead and three injured.

Moss Point Fire Chief Tommy Posey told WLOX-TV the explosion happened while workers were repairing a fish oil storage tank. The top blew off, killing one worker, and injuring three others.

The injured men were taken to Singing River Hospital. Jackson County Coroner Vicki Broadus identified 25-year-old Jerry Lee Taylor II as the man who was killed in the incident.

Broadus said Taylor’s driver’s license listed a Mobile address, but Taylor’s Facebook profile page shows he is from Helena and currently lives in Big Point in east Jackson County.

The plant is closed for the rest of the day.

The Moss Point plant and its adjacent shipyard employ about 300 people.
