Police Officer Headed to Grand Jury For Shooting

JACKSON COUNTY, MISS— When a man wouldn’t put down his gun as police asked, Jackson County Deputy Jacob Chavis says he was forced to shoot.

The man that took that hit was Robert Baker of Latimer. Now the grand jury will hear out both sides to see if Chavis was wrong for making the decision to shoot Baker.

Police say they got a call about an irate man on August 18th. When police arrived, Baker was angry and refused to put down his gun that he was aiming at officers. After he got shot, Baker had to have surgery. The Grand Jury hearings are done in private so the court won’t release the date of the hearing.

Deputy Chavis has been back at work since August 24th.
