Potential Tropical System in the Gulf, Likely to Hit West of Mississippi

Projection from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)

GULFPORT, Miss.–A weather system that could bring high winds and heavy rain to the gulf coast is churning there now, with the potential to develop into a tropical cyclone. It is forecast to land west on the Mississippi coast line.

“We’ve seen winds of tropical storm force associated with it to the northeast of the low pressure area and those could spread across the coast line and produce some hazardous conditions,” said Richard Pasch, with the National Hurricane Center.

Even though the storm is forecast to possibly land near the Texas-Louisiana border, Mississippi’s coast was being included in a heavy surf advisory Monday.

“There’s the potential for this to become a tropical depression or tropical storm over the next 24 hours, or so,” said Pasch.

News Mississippi will track all tropical systems in the Gulf.
