Rankin County School Reprimanded for Christian Views in Classroom

RANKIN COUNTY, Miss.- A Northwest Rankin School teacher is being reprimanded for calling April Fool’s Day the Atheist holiday.

The American Humanist Association’s Appignani Humanist Legal Center has sent a letter to the Rankin County School district on behalf of a student who said her teacher made Christian promotional remarks during class.

This was the alleged comment, “Atheists are throwing a fit because they don’t have their own day. They do have their own day; it’s called April Fools’ Day.” The teacher also happens to be a pastor of a church.

Clarion Ledger reports that this is not the first incident that the district has been warned about. Back in 2013 and again recently in 2015 they were violations made by the school of the separation of church and state.

The American Humanist Association wants the teacher to be warned and the behavior to stop or have further disciplinary actions taken.
