Rape at Vanderbilt: Two Convicted, Mississippian Awaiting Trial

NASHVILLE, Tenn.–The rape of a woman in a Vanderbilt dorm room in 2013 is what two former football players were convicted of Tuesday. Another former football player, “Tip” McKenzie, from Adams County, Miss., is still awaiting trial, and could spend years in prison.

Brandon Vandenburg and Cory Batey were both convicted after the jury had the case for about three hours Tuesday. They will be sentenced in March and could get decades in prison.

McKenzie and another former player were also in the room when the rape happened June 23, 2013. Some of his testimony was used in the Baty/Vanderberg trial.

The woman was raped and sodomized, according to testimony at the trial. She was drunk and passed out and did not remember what happened.

After the charges, McKenzie was banned from campus. He was later allowed to play at Alcorn State, a decision that was reversed.
