Remembering Jackson Mayor Chockwe Lumumba

JACKSON, Miss. – Jackson Mayor Chockwe Lumumba’s public viewing was held at City Hall Friday.

The viewing was set for March 7 from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and at 4 p.m. there was a remembrance hour in his honor.

The city of Jackson joined together to remember Lumumba for all the things he accomplished for the people while in office and what he meant to those who knew him as a father, husband and friend. Here’s what a few people had to say about him..

 

A Celebration of Life Service for the mayor will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Jackson Convention Complex, 105 E. Pascagoula St. Burial will follow at Autumn Woods Memorial Gardens, 4000 W. Northside Drive in Jackson. If you would like to send flowers you may send them to Willis and Sons Funeral Home, 5235 Robinson Road Extended in Jackson. Notes or letters of condolences may be sent in care of Halima Olufemi, Jackson City Hall, 219 S. President St., Jackson, MS 39205.

Lumumba died of natural causes Feb. 25 at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson. His specific cause of death has not been released, but he had suffered chest pains before arriving at the hospital that morning.

Citizens of Jackson are invited to gather on the procession route to the cemetery Saturday. The procession will leave the Jackson Convention Center directly following the service, which should end at about 2:30 p.m. The procession will begin at Pascagoula Street at Lamar and conclude at Northside Drive at College Hill. It will travel from Pascagoula Street to Gallatin Street, right on Gallatin Street to Martin Luther King Drive, then left on Northside Drive.
