The House voted Tuesday to pass SB 2710, which would prohibit the establishment of sanctuary cities in Mississippi.
The committee substitute of the original bill states that no state agency, department, college, municipality, or any agent, employee, or officer shall adopt or implement a policy that would keep federal agents from conducting an investigation or executing action regarding someone’s immigration status.
There was some debate over the bill on the floor as Rep. Joey Hood of Ackerman spoke to the bill.
“There are no repercussions for me not following this law, correct?” asked Rep. Earle Banks. “What is the purpose of this bill other than to be mean to immigrants?”
Hood said no wording in the bill suggested “being mean to immigrants.”
Because the House adopted a committee substitute, the bill goes back to the Senate for further discussion.
