Scam in Lauderdale, It’s not the IRS

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Miss.- Lauderdale county and Meridian have been seeing numerous reports from residents about a scam going on.Sheriff’s Department and police said citizens are reporting an IRS scam that is going on in the area. Individuals are receiving phone calls requesting payment of unpaid bills from taxpayers and making threats to arrest them if payment is not made immediately. They are asking for debit card information and demanding money through MoneyGram, Western Union, or any transfer system.

WTOK reports that Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun says if you receive a call like this, hang up and contact local authorities immediately. If you have caller ID and the number continues to call, do not answer. He says that the IRS would not request payment in this way, especially through using threats.
