Senate Bills to watch during the 2017 Legislative Session

As lawmakers cruise through the current legislative session, you want to know what changes could be coming your way.

News Mississippi is keeping an eye on the following Senate bills:

SB 2567– “Mississippi Health Agency Reorganization Act of 2017”; enact.

  • Passed 25 to 24
  • Motion to reconsider; fails 27-24, bill dies.

SB 2273– Require cursive writing to be taught in schools again

  • Passed 48 to 4
  • Referred to House Committee on House Education.

SB 2469– Blue, Red, Med Lives Matter, which would create hate crime penalties for anyone who may harm a first responder.

  • Passed 37 to 13
  • Referred to House Committee on House Judiciary B

SB 2607– would bring forward recommendations for changing the Mississippi Adequate Education Program formula.

  • Held on a motion to reconsider
  • Died on calendar

SB 2610— would clarify the use of cannabidiol for medical use such as seizures and other conditions.

  • Passed 52 to 0
  • Referred to House Committee on House Public Health and Human Services
  • Passes from committee

SB 2632 — Relating to define certain terms and to prohibit state agencies from lobbying the legislature or expending public funds to pay contract lobbyists.

  • Passes Senate 38-14
  • Referred to House Committee on House Accountability and Transparency
  • Referred to committee on House Appropriations
  • Passes from committee on House Accountability and Transparency.

SB 2634 — BP Settlement Funds; transfer into Gulf Coast New Restoration Reserve Fund.

  • Passes the Senate heads to the House.

SB 2687– in-person absentee voting may be conducted by voting machine or paper ballot at circuit clerk’s discretion.

  • Passes 49 to 2

SB 2689–  would prohibit personal use of campaign funds.

  • Passed the Senate, unanimously, 52-0

SB 2703— Relating to creating domestic violence as additional grounds for fault divorce.

SB 2842– Mental health court intervention programs; authorize.

SB 2896 — Relating to revise licensure for operators for fantasy sports contests.

SB 2907 — Relating to including coercion as a means of rape

  • Passes 52-0
  • Referred to House Committee on House Judiciary B.

SB 2398– Revise qualifications for Superintendents of School districts; no less than 6 years experience in “A” or “B” districts.

  • Passed 37 to 15
  • Referred to House Committee on House Education.
