Starkville Aldermen Want to Take Back Decision on Same Sex Couple Benefits

STARKVILLE, Miss. – You may remember in early September Starkville Aldermen voted unanimously in favor of a policy that would have allowed city workers to include same sex partners on their health insurance policy. This week, alderman voted 4-2 with one absentee to reverse that policy to only benefit people who are legally married in Mississippi.

“We didn’t even know what we were voting for. We didn’t have the affidavit, the legal document you are supposed to sign for the plus one coverage,” said Alderman Ben Carver. “We felt we were breaking the Mississippi constitution by providing coverage for individuals that the state of Mississippi doesn’t even recognize, same sex partners.”

Carver says he would not be surprised if Mayor Parker Wiseman vetoes the board’s new decision.

“That is his agenda. He did the same thing with the equality resolution a few months ago. If he is pro LGBT, that is fine – that is his agenda and I understand that, but he needed to be more honest to the public about that.
