STM Bulldogs: Mississippi State Continues It’s Winning Ways Behind Peters’ Three Point Barrage

Mississippi State point Lamar Peters is a player that has shown the ability to get red hot at times from behind the three point arc. Tuesday night at the Humphrey Coliseum, the Bulldogs needed those shots, as Peters tied a school record with eight makes from behind the line in a 90-77 win over McNeese State. State trailed by four points in the opening minutes of the second half, but a 19-0 run put the game out of the reach.

THE PLAYER

Peters really was feeling it tonight, continually finding open looks for himself, and setting up his teammates with five assists. Peters said in postgame that Coach Howland wants him to be a true point guard, but when he has an open shot, to take it. Peters followed that advice to a tee, and his play is a big reason the Bulldogs are celebrating a fourth straight victory.

FRONT COURT LOOKS STRONG

Both veteran and rookie power forwards had big games for Mississippi State Tuesday night, as senior Aric Holman had 8 points and 11 rebounds, while freshman Reggie Perry had another impressive performance, scoring 15 to go with 9 boards. Perry is providing a huge spark for MSU off the bench in his first year, and his development will be a key for the Bulldogs as they enter this tough final stretch of non-conference play.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Clemson stands at 6-2 on the young season, and of course, the Tigers are coming off a Sweet Sixteen appearance a season ago. This neutral site game will be one that the winner will definitely point to when it comes tournament time. Mississippi State should feel good about where it stands coming into this game, and a win would surely make for a confident group of Bulldogs coming back to Starkville to take on Cincinnati on the 15th.

We’ll hit on this on tomorrow’s Thunder & Lightning Podcast, and of course, on SportsTalk Mississippi later in the day.
