Tennessee Deputy Says He Was Attacked in DeSoto County

OLIVE BRANCH, Miss.–An off-duty Shelby County, Tenn. deputy may have been attacked in Mississippi. Deputy John Checcia was found bloody on the hood of his truck, about 7:30 Sunday morning, reported Action News 5 in Memphis.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Dept. told the TV station that Checcia told officers who were investigating the assault that three men attacked him for having a Shelby County Sheriff’s Dept. sticker on his truck.

Checcia has been off the job without pay since April for getting a DUI.

The TV station reported he had severe head injuries and abdominal injuries and had to be airlifted to the hospital.

The Olive Branch Police and DeSoto County Sheriff’s Dept. were investigating.
