Thompson Kicks Off ObamaCare Tour

TOUGALOO, Miss. – If you don’t have health insurance, Congressman Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., is hoping to get you signed up this week to the Affordable Care Act.

Thompson is on a five city Covering Mississippi Affordable Health Care Enrollment Tour.  “”We are convinced the more people know about the program, they will sign up,” he said Thursday after kicking the tour off at Tougaloo College in Jackson, Mississippi.

So far, about 15,000 people in Thompson’s district has signed up for the program.  He hopes to push that number even higher.  “Given the demographics of our state, we have some of the sickest people in the nation,” he said.  “Here’s an opportunity to alleviate a lot of the pain and suffering those people endure.”

Humana is one of only two health care provides offering coverage to Mississippi through the Affordable Care Act.  Their representatives are traveling the tour route with Thompson, and will have a mobile unit on site at each stop.  “So people can came in and sit down; and we can educate and enroll.  We have wireless computers inside; so people can connect tohealthcare.gov while in there,” said Humana spokesperson Stacy Carter.

The tour will also make stops this week in Yazoo City, Indianola, Mt. Bayou and Clarksdale.

The deadline to enroll for Affordable Health Care coverage is March 31.
