Trial Set for North Mississippi Highway Murders

TUNICA COUNTY, Miss. – You may remember those North Mississippi highway murders that caused quite a panic in May 2012. Cops say James D. Willie shot two people to death.

Thomas Schlender was gunned down in his truck on i55 near Pope, he was traveling from Nebraska to pick up his grandson from college in Florida Lori Carswell of Hernando was found lying near her car on the shoulder of Highway 713 in Tunica. Both victims were shot in the head.

Willie is now set to stand trial in Tunica County on August 12. He is still being held on a 1.5 million dollar bond in South Mississippi.

District attorney John Champion says he is seeking the death penalty, but right now he is still waiting on Willie’s mental evaluation.
