UPDATE: Charges increased in firefighter hit-and-run

An arrest has been made after two volunteer firefighters were killed and another was injured in Sumrall over a week ago.

UPDATE: Brandon Chance Eaton, 31, has been arrested and charged with three counts of aggravated DUI. Each count carries a $1 million dollar bond and 25 years in prison.

He was originally charged with hit-and-run leading to death. However, his blood test came back and his blood alcohol level was much higher than the .08 limit at the time of the accident.

“The toxicology report has been done,” said Rigel. “But the results have not come in yet.”

Clinton Alvin Beasley, 80, and Loretta Ann Sykes, 53 were both pronounced dead at the scene after being hit. A third volunteer was taken to the hospital and is now in stable condition.

Rigel said the Sumrall Volunteer Fire Association was assisting in a traffic accident when the hit-and-run took place.

Witnesses told Rigel that Eaton was spotted about six miles away on Scruggs Road following the accident.

“He had driven into someone’s yard and told them he had hit some people,” said Rigel. “So the homeowner called.. . and when we got there, we took him into custody and impounded the vehicle.”

Eaton is scheduled to see the judge at 11am Thursday. News Mississippi will continue to update this story as more information is released.
